Weather Notes

All we have been hearing for the last few days is how cold it has been. And it has been cold.

I live in Iowa but I am as far west in Iowa as you can go. It has been cold. I stayed inside.

I grew up hearing about the terrible storms here on the plains. Sometimes whole groups of people succumbed to the weather.

There is the story of the teachers who tied themselves to their students so they would not be separated by wind and snow. Farmers would run guide ropes between the house and the barn so they could tend to the animals without being lost.

Houses would be buried completely by snow. Sometimes tunnels would be dug to outbuildings.

And the cold. I remember cold days and walking to school. Nothing this extreme of course but to a small child it felt that way after a mile or so.

Thankfully schools were closed all over the place. It was too cold for children and animals to be out. It has been days since I have seen an animal or a bird out the window.

So today was a bit warmer amd the weekend is supposed to be comfortable. Before the temperatures drop slightly again.

I am glad. I need a few groceries. Besides I am feeling a little cabin fever. A drive into town will be just the thing.

I hope all of you are safe and warm too.

  1. Safe and warm (relatively) here (28 degrees this morning). We lived in eastern Nebraska from 1962 to 1965 and one of those winters was brutal. The number "32 below" sticks in my mind. We had icicles from eaves to the ground and the deepest snow I had ever up to then (or since) seen.

You sure do live in western Iowa. We have a saying about remote places, "It's not the end of the world but you can see it from there." In your case, replace "the end of the world" with "South Dakota"....There are two little towns in south Georgia named Adel and Sparks. The saying around there is that Adel is so close to hell you can see sparks.

I think leaving comments is as much fun as composing posts.

    1. I actually grew up in eastern Nebraska (Go Huskers!). South Dakota is just across the river from here. Only a few miles south is Nebraska. On a clear day you can see it in the distance.

  2. We drove through Iowa often, on childhood vacations, and adult vacations. As a child, Iowa was nothing but corn. As an adult, I'd tell children, Iowa is all corn! It also is the high prairie, and I found that designation magical.

    1. The drive through Iowa is one of the longest most boring rides you can take.

    1. We do not get the monsoons or other bad weather sometimes seen in your part of the world. We just complain more.

  6. I can understand how you can get cabin fever when the weather is so cold, Emma. Hopefully, you will get some warming temps as we are predicted to get this coming week. Thanks for the birthday wishes which were much appreciated.
