What Season Is It Anyway?

We had some snow overnight a few days ago. Not a lot but enough to cover things. It is supposed to be spring.

I see a few encouraging signs. The trees are putting forth leaves. High winds have even blown a few baby seeds from the maple trees.

Lawns are being mowed early Sunday. I wonder why that is the day so many people choose to mow the lawn.

As I drive by farms with cattle I see so many tiny calves. So far I have not seem any lambs or kids. Maybe their mothers are keeping them more out of sight.

I have seen a few young deer. I think for the most part the really young ones are kept secluded. I have however seen a couple with their spots still in place.

Our town used to be a haven for feral cats. There are still a few but not as many. I have not seen any kittens this year.

A lot of families have a dog or two. It is seldom that any have babies. This state requires that all rescue dogs be fixed soon after adoption. It is a good idea.

A sure sign of spring is the turkey vultures. They have returned. I see them soaring in the sky scouting for tasty morsels.

The weather is having a hard time making up its mind. It will be extremely warm for a couple of days then temperatures will drop. Nighttime temperatures are often at or below freezing.

So I ask you is it spring yet?

  2. Spring seems to have a hard time wrestling control from winter.

  3. April sometimes is win-ring and changes it’s mind what part it wants to be on a daily basis. One day 30 degrees and the next day 70. I never put my jacket away till mid May.

I had a very young raccoon on my deck tonight. It had been with it’s mom the last couple of weeks, but now it comes alone. We had all the feral cats that came to our backyard fixed so we no longer have kittens that we have to find homes for.

    2. Good for you for spaying and neutering those feral cats!

  4. Emma, I wonder what the state does if a rescue dog isn't neutered, and why the law doesn't also apply to cats. Oregon has no such law, but the private shelters that I know of neuter pets upfront and pass the fee along to the adopter. The local public shelter "encourages" adopters to neuter, which makes about as much sense as encouraging idiots to wear Covid masks.
The Willamette Valley low last night was 39, but we started seeing early flowers in late January. I would guess that we're about as far north as you (we're nearly to the 45th parallel), but the Pacific Ocean keeps things a lot warmer in winter and cooler in summer. Our winters sure are wet though.

    1. Iowa may include neutering in the law. Because I do not own a cat I do not know. I have been seeing dandelions for a couple of days. Can violets be far behind? And there is a pretty little songbird in the tree out front. Spring is winning.

    1. I believe spring is here. It still gets chilly at night. That makes me happy because I like lots of covers.

  7. I have been wondering the same here in Nashua, NH, Emma. Many days in recent weeks have been very windy and have blown petals off newly opened blooms, especially the tulips. People may mow lawns on Sunday as it’s their day off.

    1. I am feeling very spring-y today. The temperatures are much warmer than I like them but I have had the house opened to the fresh air. It is glorious.
