The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year

It is that time again. Thanksgiving is over. Time to start thinking of Christmas.

My Thanksgiving was quiet. Most of my children live in a different state. The son I live with and I had turkey and all the "fixins". He is trying to eat a Keto diet because of his diabetes and it helps a lot. But he cheated for Thanksgiving.

We had turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, sweet potatoes, homemade cranberries, cream-style corn, dinner rolls, and of course pumpkin pie with whipped cream. As expected I ate more than I should. It was great.

Now I have leftovers for days. I like leftovers so that is no problem. My son has a delivery service for his Keto meals so I only have to fend for myself. I will eat leftovers until I cannot take any more.

But I wanted to talk about Christmas. My gifts have been mailed so that is done. All I have to do now is wait for Christmas.

The best part of the season is the Christmas movies. I have been watching so many already. There are the classics like Miracle on 34th Street and White Christmas. There are cartoons like How The Grinch Stole Christmas and Rudolph The Red-nosed Reindeer. Newer classics like Mrs Miracle and Elf. I watch Bad Santa and Fred Claus.

Whoopi Goldberg in Call Me Claus is a must. Christmas with The Kranks is a favorite. The Santa Clause 1, 2, and 3 are necessities. Home Alone 1 and 2 I watch but I do not care for the rest of the Home Alone movies.

There are so many others. I usually finish watching them in time for Valentine's Day.

Then there is the music. I just finished listening to Louie Prima my favorite big band sound.

I have favorites. Blue Christmas by both Elvis and Porky Pig. Oh Holy Night by the Vienna Boys Choir. Santa Claus Is Coming To Town by Bruce Springsteen or Michael Jackson. Feliz Navidad by Jose Feliciano. Mrs. Fogarty's Christmas Cake by The Irish Rovers.

Yellin At The Christmas Tree by Billy Idol. I am Santa Claus by Bob Rivers (sounding like Ozzy Osbourne). Happy Xmas (War Is Over) by John Lennon. Santa Claus Is Watching You by Ray Stevens. Both versions of Santa Baby by Eartha Kitt.

Oh I could go on and on and on. There is a lot of great Christmas music.

We will have a ham for Christmas. With "fixins" of course and pie.

I wish a Merry Christmas to each and everyone. Be safe with your celebration. May Santa bring you all that you desire. And remember to give a bit of joy to someone who needs it.

  1. Dear Emma, thank you for that wonderful long list of movies and songs! I will copy many titles and try to get them via Amazon - my son, who is a really good singer (he sang 15 Elvis songs at the school's graduating party and all the moms wanted to rent him for birthday parties) is living in Bavaria now with his family - last year we were there for Christmas - this year the lockdown forbids it.
I wish you a happy time now, Advent is so lovely contemplative.

    1. Today I am making a casserole of leftovers. Turkey chunks, stuffing, mashed potatoes all covered with turkey gravy. I will have sweet potatoes on the side. I think that will be the end of my leftovers.

  4. Your Thanksgiving would be wonderful and Christmas too as the weather is cool. Down here in Australia it is hot usually so we have cold meats and salads, seafood and for dessert I do icecream with all different dried fruits in it. Sometimes I buy a special that the supermarket does and it is ice cream pudding, really just a mixed dried fruit icecream with some cinnamon flavouring and of course some chocolate chips in the mix and it is delicious too. If you are interested to look at my blog on my travels in Australia I would be pleased to receive your comments.

  5. Yes, joy is or should be on the radar. My daughter fixed non-egg eggnog. Husband is allergic to eggs. So she used a vanilla pudding mixed with milk, spices. It is something he could eat, and the boys could make.

  6. It was wonderful to hear about your Thanksgiving feast, Emma, and we did much the same also with only two. The only differences were no cream style corn or dinner rolls (we forgot those). And we also have been enjoying leftovers the past few days in the form of turkey soup, sandwiches, and pot pie plus some turkey is frozen for a future pot pie!
Yes, to holiday films and music. We have a personal collection of both and this year we started movie watching at the beginning of Nov. as we have over 5o and this year I added several more bought on from ebay: Nightmare Before Christmas, Trading Places, While You Were Sleeping, 3 Godfathers, Home Alone2, and The Man Who Saved Christmas.
Our favorite "oldies" are Miracle on 34th Street (we have the old & new versions), The Bishop's Wife, Holiday Affair, Beyond Tomorrow, Rupert the Great, The Shop Around the Corner, Holiday Inn, White Christmas.
More recent faves: Love Actually, The Holiday, One Special Night, The Grinch That Stole Christmas, Serendipity, Scrooged, Mixed Nuts, Christmas Story, Christmas Carol (we have several versions), Santa Clause (1 to 3), Home Alone and probably others I can't recall now
Holiday music favorites include Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Glenn Miller, Ella F and Louis Armstrong, Barbara Streisand, Dianna Krall, Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole and for jazzy versions Brian Setzer. The Trans Siberian Orchestra is quite unique on their holiday CDs if a bit loud at times.
My personal favorites are Paul McCartney's, Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas Time and Eartha Kitt's, Santa Baby

Like you I could go on and on, but will stop here and will do a post soon listing some others in our collection. Many are NOT considered "holiday" films, yet have Christmas in them, for example: We're No Angels with Humphrey Bogart and 3 Godfathers with John Wayne. We didn't like this one, directed by John Houston and considered the only Christmas western.

    1. You have some fabulous movies. I watch all of them. And your taste in music is good. I tend to gravitate to novelty songs. 3 Godfathers is a good movie. I'll bet you dislike it because they all die. The baby made it though and that is what the godfathers were trying to accomplish.

  7. Thanks and I have plenty more movies and music to enjoy.
No, they didn't all die in 3 Godfathers. John Wayne's character was sent to prison, but received send-off from the whole town. And it was just not movie I would recommend, but it is in our collection for its uniqueness.

  9. On the Great British Baking contest, Paul Hollywood (his real name) demonstrated how to make an "after holidays meals". It was a pot pie of sorts, filled with the remains of a Christmas dinner, the whole works.

I want to extend Christmas for weeks after its passing. We are watching Hallmark movies, and have the same list as you. Thanks for the list of ones I haven't heard.

    Merry Christmas, Midwest friend.

    1. I love casseroles. I have seen several that use Christmas leftovers. I just take whatever I have left and combine it and heat it up. It always turns out good.
