Baby It's Cold Outside
So here we are in the new year of 2018. Many of us have high expectations for this year. Some of us have made resolutions to improve our lives. Some like Rick and Jilda make vision boards to lay out their plans and expectations for the year.
So we have had really cold weather since before Christmas. By cold I mean always below zero at night. This past week our high temperatures of the day have often not been above zero ddegrees.
Tomorrow it is supposed to be eighteen degrees above zero for a high. But down to twenty four below tonight. My brand new furnace has really been working hard. Weather like this makes me happy to have it.
We have not had as much snow as many around us have. Only maybe three or four inches are on the ground right now. It could certainly be worse.
I hope all of you in the middle of this cold snap are staying warm.
I am a poor one to write about expectations for the year. I am an optimist by nature so I always look for the best. I do have a few hopes. I hope some of my children an grandchildren will be able to visit this year. And I hope for no big financial setbacks. Two simple hopes.
I am a worse one to write about resolutions. I do not really believe in New Year's resolutions. They are a good idea in theory. Z person might resolve to give up a bad habit, or put their finances right, or to lose weight. All are noble goals. But without a bit of planning they are doomed to fail.
When the resolution fails the person feels like a failure.
Perhaps it might be better to set short term goals such as I will not eat chocolate for four days. It would be an easier goal. Then if desired another four days could be a goal. But who knows?
I like the idea of vision boards. But they seem like a lot of planning.
I have always been a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants kind of person. That is why I have very little in the way of "things". But I was not impressed by "thungs" so it works well for me.
Kay G. askedd me what one word would be what I wish in the new year. My answer was serenity. What is yours?

Serenity, I really like that one. I wish it for you.
ReplyDeleteThank you. Except for the occasional bout of chaos my life is quite serene.
DeleteBrrr, sounds really cold. I am happy your new furnace is keeping you warm. I like the idea of setting 4 day goals at a time. It doesn't seem so overwhelming.
ReplyDeleteThe overwhelming part is what trips me every time. I can manage a few days but a whole year?
DeleteIt's as cold here as it was in 1978, which set our old records. Yea for furnaces.
ReplyDeleteWe had a record cold New Years Eve here. That is saying something for this part of the country. Today we are actually above zero. Woo-hoo.
DeleteI had to look up vision boards.
ReplyDeleteMy resolution this year is to have a good attitude and look on the bright side whenever possible.
Lofty goals. I wish you the best.
DeleteI am tempted to say Undisturbedness, but it would be a lonely, isolated existence, I'm afraid, much like Philip Nolan in the story The Man Without A Country. Peace and freedom, those are much better words.
DeleteI like undisturbedness. You would not be disturbed by someone you want to be with so you would not be lonely. Philip Nolan was not totally alone. He had interaction with the sailors and occasional visitors on the ships. He was just allowed no mention of his country. By the same token I like peace and freedom too. Both are beautiful sentiments.
DeleteBEAUTIFUL post dearest Emma!
ReplyDeletei wish you and your kids best of luck for their goals !
either i don't make resolutions ,i just try to live in moment and give my best to make it easy and happy for me ,my loved ones and surroundings and everything gets it's shape from this way of thinking .
i lOVED the idea of short term goal and i am definitely going to try it .
i am also not lover of material dear Emma and as much we are growing materially i am feeling as walls are getting close around me and sometime i want to fly above from this cage ,material does not go with my nature still i love my family and i am happy for their happiness
I am often surprised at how alike we think. As long as my family is happy and healthy I am content.
DeleteSerenity, health and happiness are my wishes for the new year. I don't wish for material objects either.
ReplyDeleteWell you know what they say about great minds.
DeleteGlad to hear your temps have not been as bone-chilling as our own, Emma. And, right now we are in the midst of a blizzard that's been raging all day. Thankfully, we don't have to go out and shovel anything - the joys of apt living in New England for sure. My New Year's wish would be the ability to complete some projects from last year, but I do like your idea of short term resolutions as well.
ReplyDeleteActually these are the first days of not bone chilling temperatures. It is refreshing to have a high of 7 degrees above zero.
DeleteThank for your very good article.! i always enjoy & read the post you are sharing!
