DNA

My son decided to take a DNA test. From his father he knew there would be Irish, German, and Swedish. I on the other hand am a melting pot of many nationalities.

It took several weeks for him to receive the results. It was fun looking through the results. It made me want my own.

My son gave me a test for Christmas. It consisted of directions about how to use it, a mailing box, and a sterile test tube with lid.

I put the proper amount of clean saliva in the tube and mailed it. It was hard waiting for the results.

Finally they arrived. I knew one of my grandmothers was 100% Danish. I knew there would be a lot of

Germanic ancestry.

From my DNA results I am mostly of Northern European descent. It tells me what percentage of what nationality makes me. It is fascinating.

I have also learned that even though we have the same parents my brothers and sisters DNA will probably not match exactly. There may be small differences in traits that we inherited. That is why we have different colors of hair, different eye colors, even baldness.

Every once in a while the web site for the DNA company re-defines the tests. It might include a specific area of a country and what percentage I have from there.

Since having the test done I have learned from other sources that there were many Mormon ancestors. They traveled through here as they were on their way to Utah. Who knew?

I am glad I did it. It lets me know a bit more of who I am and why I have certain traits.

  1. Hey! I have Mormon ancestry also! That was a surprise for our family, we didn't know! Also, the woman who won the Wimbledon Championship recently? I saw a photo of her all dressed up and dancing with Sinner, the winner of the Men's Final. She looked so much like Toni Collette to me. I looked up Toni Collette and she is from Australia. And THEN, I read that Toni Collette was on one of those shows, I think it was "Who Do You THink You Are". Turns out, her grandmother must have had an affair with an American serviceman in WW2. So, I am thinking that American had Polish ancestry! Wouldn't it be great if I am right?
