Purple Cow?

 I never saw a Purple Cow,
I never hope to see one;
But I can tell you, anyhow,
I'd rather see than be one.

                                           Gelett Burgess

That is one of the first poems that was not a nursery rhyme taught to me by my mother. It is cute and easy to learn.

The absurdity of a cow being purple makes the poem memorable.

There have been many parodies of the poem. They all add to the humor of it and some take it to a new level.

In fact Gelett Burgess grew to hate his poem. He even wrote a new one.

Ah, yes, I wrote the "Purple Cow"—
I'm Sorry, now, I wrote it;
But I can tell you Anyhow
I'll Kill you if you Quote it!

I thought of the poem today. I saw a commercial with John Cena and a purple cow. Imagine that. So Of course I had to write a poem.

Today I saw a purple cow.
It was a shock to see one.
Still I can tell you anyhow
I never thought there'd be one.

  1. Today I saw a purple blog,
    Must be their favorite hue
    Maybe I'll change my color too,
    Into a violet blue.

  5. Today I saw a purple cow
    ‘Twas dressed in crimson silk.
    Had it been brown I’d have said “How now?”
    I’m hoping for purple milk.

  6. Today I saw a purple cow,
    To lavender it faded.
    One day I turned a sickly green
    And people called me jaded.

  8. The First Poem I learned was actually a Song to be Sung called Senor Delgado, about a Cat... it was witty but so long that I am amazed I still remember every verse all these Decades later at a Great-Grandma!
