Being Thankful

We all look forward to the feast we will be offered on Thanksgiving. Turkey, stuffing, potatoes, gravy, cranberries, corn, sweet potatoes, etc. Then comes dessert. Pumpkin pie is my favorite for Thanksgiving.

Some of the things I serve are prepared ahead of time and refrigerated. If they need to be warm I can put them in the microwave. It gives me more time to watch the parade and spend time with family. Of course, the smell of the turkey permeates the house. It is a comforting smell and makes us hungry.

We eat, sometimes too much. Then we begin telling family stories. It is a good way to reconnect.

What we need to remember are the things we are thankful for.

I am going to share the things I appreciate.

My children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren are healthy, loving, active, and intelligent. I was fortunate to have wonderful parents and grandparents. My life has been filled with love.

I married into a loving family and immediately felt accepted. I am basically healthy and alert. My life has been fairly long and moderately exciting.

I live where I wish to be and how I wish to live. I have nice neighbors and a good community. I have everything I need and much of what I want. Life is good.

What are you thankful for?

  1. Your list is what most of us long for. A loving family around you, pretty good health and a comfortable home.

But we shouldn't let the green-eyed monster of envy get in the way of being thankful for what we have.
I have a loving husband who is much older than I. Slowing down but still always caring for me. Quiet and considerate. Still opening doors for me. Tending to the garbage. Mopping and sweeping floors. Shopping and always carrying the groceries in. Doing most of the cooking and even helps with the dishes!
One would wonder what I do around the house???
I just stay out of his way while he tends to business.
So the one big thing I am thankful for is my husband!!!

  2. Wonderful ways you spend Thanksgiving! Surrounded by family and love is a great way to spend the day and to live a life. I am so grateful for so many things, a lot of what you are grateful for, but my biggest gratitude is for what Jesus did for me on the cross, my salvation, and my eternal life with him :)

    Happy Thanksgiving!

  3. Beautiful reflextions!
In Brazil we do not celebrate Thanks Giving - unfortunately. I think it should be celebrated everywhere, because we live in an unthankful world. That's why there's so much pain!

    1. Many countries do have thanksgiving celebrations. Perhaps you could make your own day. Surely no one would be against that.

  11. I wrote on someone's blog that I am thankful for indoor plumbing including flush toilets and hot and cold running water, because I grew up without them. I am thankful for food in the refrigerator an a car that runs. I am thankful that my children and grandchildren are in church and not in jail. I am also thankful, though I did not put it on anyone's blog, for the air I breathe and the warmth of the sun. I am thankful for blue sky and green grass. I am thankful for a wonderful companion who has walked beside me for 56 years. I am thankful for my little Chihuahua dog, whose name is Senorita Juanita Rosita Conchita Abigail, Abby for short. I am thankful for good health and for enough money to put gasoline in that car.

    1. Great answer! I fully agree with indoor plumbing. I also had to run out back to go to the bathroom. I mention it often because I never want to be without an indoor toilet again. I also hated having to pump water in the freezing cold. It often required priming the pump with hot water because the water from the well had frozen. Ah... the good old days...

  13. This was a great post, Emma, and most of us would agree with being thankful for family, good neighbors, and good people in general. I am thankful for my husband who is also my best friend and the most supportive person in my life. I appreciate all fellow bloggers and feel that they are friends, who I have never met (maybe one day). Thankfully, I never grew up without indoor plumbing or not enough food. My parents provided the basics and I miss them, especially at holiday times, when their absence is most felt as family gathers.

    1. Missing loved ones is the hard part of a major holiday. We usually devote some time talking about them. It is good to remember.
