Miss Fogarty's Christmas Cake

Miss Fogarty's Christmas Cake Lyrics

As I sat in my window last evening, the letterman
brought it to me
A little gilt-edged invitation sayin' "Gilhooley come
over to tea"
I knew that the Fogarty's sent it. So I went just for
old friendships sake.
The first think they gave me to tackle was a slice of
Miss Fogarty's cake.

Chorus:
There were plums and prunes and cherries,
There were citrons and raisins and cinnamon, too
There was nutmeg, cloves and berries
And a crust that was nailed on with glue
There were caraway seeds in abundance
Such that work up a fine stomach ache
That could kill a man twice after eating a slice
Of Miss Fogarty's Christmas cake.

Miss Mulligan wanted to try it, but really it wasn't no
use
For we worked in it over an hour and we couldn't get
none of it loose
Till Murphy came in with a hatchet And Kelly came in
with a saw
That cake was enough be the powers above for to
paralyze any man's jaws

Miss Fogarty proud as a peacock, kept smiling and
blinking away
Till she flipped over Flanagan's brogans and she spilt
the homebrew in her tea
Aye Gilhooley she says you're not eatin, Try a little
bit more for me sake
And no Miss Fogarty says I, for I've had quite enough
of your cake

Maloney was took with the colic, O'Donnell's a pain in
his head
McNaughton lay down on the sofa, and he swore that he
wished he was dead
Miss Bailey went into hysterics and there she did
wriggle and shake
And everyone swore they were poisoned just from eating
Miss Fogarty's cake

  1. Great song, Emma. I especially loved the jig at the end. The Irish Rovers are great musicians!

Those fruit cakes were famous years ago, not so much any more.

    1. My mother used to collect all sorts of recipes. One year she decided to make every single fruitcake she had a recipe for. I will probably never eat fruitcake again. The Irish Rovers are wonderful musicians and super nice people. My granddaughter and I first went to see them when she was about 5. Over the years they would recognize her and it made her feel so special. They took time to talk to future musicians, us older folks, and especially the children.

  2. That's a fun song. We went to Ireland several years ago and fell in love with the Irish and their music. We played in pubs every night and this is the music we heard.

    1. Being the mother of 4 Irish children I also am in love with the Irish. Celtic music is either very fun or very sorrowful. Feelings are a huge part of the music. This one is fun.

  3. That's fun, Emma. Hadn't heard it before.
On Friday I was at a Christmas Party with American folk singers (though two of the four were Italians :-)
I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Britta x

  6. Hilarious! I have always rather liked fruitcake, actually, which probably in many people's eyes makes me nuttier than a.

A very merry Christmas and happy New Year to you, my Nebraskan Irish friend. We might as well include your whole family as well since I'm in a jovial holiday mood.

    1. I and my whole Irish and not so Irish family thank you. Merry Christmas to you and your family. I will eat a very small piece of fruitcake once in a while but I cannot eat more than that.
