Spring?????????

After a very cold and snowy winter we finally warmed up. It took close to a week but finally most of the snow and ice melted. The snowman the little boy who visits his father across the street melted to a short post of snow.

I am ready to be done with the snow and ice. As I am getting older I worry about slipping and falling. It seems that older bones break more easily.

I am ready to be able to sit in the yard. I can watch the birds and squirrels. I can see the gras and trees turn green. I can look at the lovely colors of the flowers all around. Yes. I am ready.

Before I fell asleep last night I heard a few raindrops. I like rain.

This morning I woke up to snow. Lots of snow.

And wind. About 20 miles per hour. Not a terrible wind but respectable. The snow is blowing around.

I look out my window and can see on the back porch that there is about a three to four inch accumulation so far. They are predicting up to eight inches by tomorrow.

So spring is not here yet. Winter is not giving up without a fight.

We were notified this afternoon that we are once again having a blizzard. The Interstate Highway is closed until sometime tomorrow.

Now we are dealing with flood warnings. The Big Sioux River is over the banks about 20 miles from here. Unless we get more precipitation it should be okay in our immediate area but the river is right up to the edge of the banks. What a winter!

  1. I've not lived in the great plains, but have read a lot. I think Willa Cather didn't like your winters, either.

    1. This has been an unusual winter even for here. Heavy snow is normal. Cold temperatures are normal. I am tired of both. Flooding does not usually happen until the spring thaws.

    1. I would say that I am grateful that at least we are not having earthquakes or volcanic eruptions but that is just asking for trouble.

  3. Dear Emma, I am fed up with winter too! Here it looks as if spring is in the air - but: one never knows. Well - it is still March....

    1. That is what I keep saying. Every year people get out their summer clothes and begin their outdoor revelries.Just when they are sure winter is completely gone there is more snow.

  4. i can imagine how it gets hard to enjoy extremes of seasons dear Emma!

all that we used to do as fun in winters of our childhood and youth is being like an old dream now .
this is great and pleasant that you are ready to enjoy the blessings and nature's wonder around you which was not possible to ponder upon in that excited era :)

Sorry to hear that weather is again getting hard on you and you are threatened with more blizzard and flood.
please keep in touch and let us know about your well being.
i am sure God will keep you safe and at peace hopefully!

    1. I like the changing of the seasons. I complain about the cold weather after a while but I would rather have it cold than really hot. All is well here.

  5. This is a difficult time of the year for those in snow country. Often the worst blizzards hit in March, when everyone is sick of it. Spring WILL come, though.

  7. I am obviously reading this post a little late, Emma, as we also received a blast of snow from this storm - about 15 inches fell all day last Tuesday. And it is still lingering as of today (sigh).
